Start with the map, not the listings
Most home searches open with a list of houses. That list is easier to read when the geography comes first. On the Space Coast, a few miles can separate a mainland street along the lagoon from an oceanfront condominium, and the route between them runs over a causeway. Knowing which side of the river a home sits on — and which bridge connects it to the rest of the county — is basic information, and it is the kind of information this guide is built to give.
The Space Coast's geography is set by two lagoons. The Indian River Lagoon runs along the mainland's edge, and the Banana River separates Merritt Island from the barrier island where the beach communities stand. Five causeways cross these waters in and around the six communities covered here — US 192, SR 518, SR 404, SR 520, and SR 528 — so almost every trip between a mainland address and a beach address is a bridge trip, and the guide notes the relevant crossing for each community it covers.
The Space Coast Neighborhood Explorer is published by MaxxCity Realty LLC, a Space Coast and Treasure Coast brokerage firm. It covers six anchor communities in Brevard County: Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Viera on and near the mainland, and Satellite Beach, Indialantic, and Cocoa Beach on the barrier island. Each community has a section in the guide describing its location, its road and causeway access, its named public parks and beach facilities, and the types of housing found there — stated as facts, without rankings or character judgments.
This guide is a starting point — the facts here are general information; your REALTOR® at MaxxCity Realty LLC can walk a specific street with you.
Six anchor communities
Melbourne
A mainland city on the western shore of the Indian River Lagoon. It includes Historic Downtown Melbourne and the Eau Gallie Arts District, and two causeways run east from it to the barrier island.
Palm Bay
A mainland city in southern Brevard County, laid out across a wide platted grid west of the Indian River. Turkey Creek and the Turkey Creek Sanctuary run through its northern side, and I-95 crosses its western edge.
Viera
A master-planned community in central Brevard, west of I-95, developed in phases since the 1990s. It is built around named villages and includes The Avenue Viera shopping center and Duran Golf Club.
Satellite Beach
A city on the barrier island, with the Banana River on its west side and the Atlantic Ocean on its east. Highway A1A runs through it, and its city beach parks include Pelican Beach Park and Hightower Beach Park.
Indialantic
A town on the barrier island at the eastern end of the Melbourne Causeway (US 192). James H. Nance Park sits on its oceanfront, and the shops and restaurants of Fifth Avenue stand at the causeway's end.
Cocoa Beach
A barrier-island city south of Cape Canaveral, reached by the SR 520 and SR 528 causeways. It is known for the Cocoa Beach Pier and Ron Jon Surf Shop, with canals cut into its Banana River side.
How the Explorer works with MaxxCityHomes
This site explains places; MaxxCityHomes is where the live inventory is. The two are designed to be used in sequence:
Read the guide
Start with the community sections. Each one covers location, access, named public facilities, and housing types, in that order, for all six anchor communities.
Search the listings
Every guide section ends with a link to current listings for that community on MaxxCityHomes, the listing site maintained by MaxxCity Realty LLC, where searches can be narrowed by price, size, and property type.
Walk the street
When a street or a specific property is the question, a REALTOR® from MaxxCity Realty LLC can walk it with you and answer for that address rather than the area in general. Call (321) 468-5992.
Frequently asked questions
Which communities does this guide cover?
Six anchor communities in Brevard County: Melbourne, Palm Bay, Viera, Satellite Beach, Indialantic, and Cocoa Beach. MaxxCity Realty LLC also serves the wider Space Coast and Treasure Coast; the guide starts with these six because they cover the county's mainland, its planned community, and its barrier island.
Are the home listings on this site?
No. This site carries community information only. Current listings, with prices and photographs, are on MaxxCityHomes, and each section of the guide links to the listing search for its community so the two stay one click apart.
Why does the guide avoid describing what an area is "like"?
Because descriptions of character can steer buyers, and steering has no place in a housing guide. The guide reports facts that can be checked — a park's name, a causeway's route, the housing types present — and leaves judgments about an area to the person who will live there, ideally after seeing it in person.
How current is the information here?
The geographic and facility information describes the communities as they stand and is reviewed as facilities and roads change. Listing information changes daily, which is why listings live on MaxxCityHomes rather than on these pages.
